A surgeon who knows when not to operate

Dr. Venkat Ganapathy is a dual board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon with over 25 years of clinical, academic and leadership experience across Canada and the United States. He trained through dual fellowship programmes at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto, two of Canada's leading academic spine centers.

His path to spine surgery was personal. Watching his grandfather overcome a debilitating spine condition, and learning alongside his father, an ENT surgeon, gave him an early understanding of what patients carry into every appointment. That understanding shapes every consultation.

He previously served as Chief of Orthopedic Spine Service at the University of Arizona Banner Health System, was named Educator of the Year by the University of Arizona Orthopedics programme and is an active AOSpine North America teaching faculty member.

"Good surgeons know how to operate. Better ones know when to operate. The best know when not to."

Patient education before decisions

These guides help patients and families understand when spine surgery helps, when it does not and what to ask before making a decision.

Looking for the best spine surgeon in Arizona?

Patients often search for the best spine surgeon in Arizona when they need a clear answer about pain, weakness, numbness, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, disc herniation or revision surgery. The right surgeon for you should match your diagnosis, explain non-surgical options first and show deep experience with the procedure being discussed.

Common Questions

What spine conditions does Dr. Ganapathy treat across Arizona?+
Dr. Ganapathy treats disc herniation, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, cervical myelopathy, adult spinal deformity, scoliosis, kyphosis, neck pain, radiculopathy, ankylosing spondylitis, spinal fractures and complex revision spine conditions. He serves patients across Arizona.
What does dual board certification mean for patients?+
Dr. Ganapathy is board certified by both the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (USA) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This dual certification is held by a very small number of spine surgeons in Arizona and reflects training and examination standards across two national systems. He also completed double fellowship training at the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario.
Does Dr. Ganapathy recommend surgery as a first step?+
No. Dr. Ganapathy prioritizes non-surgical care for every patient. His clinical principle is simple: good surgeons know how to operate, better ones know when to operate and the best know when not to. When surgery is the right answer, the plan is built around your life, not just your imaging.
Does Dr. Ganapathy accept complex and revision cases?+
Yes. Dr. Ganapathy has over 25 years of complex spine experience, including revision surgery, adjacent-segment disease, deformity correction and cases referred by other Arizona surgeons. He welcomes second opinions and complex referrals from statewide.
Is Dr. Ganapathy accepting new patients and does he take insurance?+
Yes. Dr. Ganapathy is currently accepting new patients across Arizona. A new clinic location is coming soon. He accepts both insurance and self-pay patients. Referrals from primary care physicians, physiatrists and neurologists across Arizona are welcome.
How should I choose the best spine surgeon in Arizona?+
Start with board certification, fellowship training, experience with your specific spine condition and a clear discussion of non-surgical options. Look for a surgeon who explains the risks, benefits, recovery and reasons not to operate. For complex deformity, revision surgery, cervical myelopathy or minimally invasive spine surgery, ask how often the surgeon treats cases like yours.
